After ignoring him for a year, Trump finally responded to a year’s worth of opposition tweets and opinion pieces by Russell Moore, the head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention, by tweeting out a personal attack:

@drmoore Russell Moore is truly a terrible representative of Evangelicals and all of the good they stand for. A nasty guy with no heart! (May 9, 2016)

Any fair assessment of Moore’s tweets about Trump (or his tweets about Trump’s evangelical supporters, like Falwell and Jeffress) would show that the Southern Baptist had already taken the fight to a personal level—and often laced it with intelligent condescension and biting sarcasm. Such is the nature of political mudslinging.

Robert Jeffress entered the fray by saying that Moore had led the way when he “launched numerous vitriolic attacks not only against Trump’s policies but about his own character and integrity.” Jeffress noted that Moore “absolutely does not speak for all Southern Baptists even as I don’t speak for all Southern Baptists” and that “no one should be surprised that Trump would respond to such attacks.”
